this & that thursday

Oh my! I humbly apologise for my prolonged silence.
I believe, and I dare to say this with tentative confidence, my level of inspiration seems directly proportional to the need to procrastinate. Or perhaps I was just enjoying the Easter break? I'll let that question float - unanswered. Nonetheless I have missed my little outlet here, somewhere not too far from nowhere in the grand depths of the internet abyss.
For all of you still tuning in, 'hi there - you look lovely/handsome today.'

Here are some pretty/fun/interesting/wonderful/splendiferous bits and pieces that my heart beats a little faster for at the moment:

one: artwork by Jan Avendano [here] two:personalised chairs [here] three: liebling shoes [here]
four: 'spoon' by amy krouse rosenthal [here] five: artwork by Joe Kievett [here]
Do yourself a favour: find and read 'SPOON'. Who would have thought a piece of cutlery could be so inspiring!? Not me that is for sure. I now slurp at my soup with a new found fondness for the liquid vessel on a stick.

Get stirred up!

a sock apology

A friend looked down at my feet the other night while we were sitting on the couch watching TV and in horror asked me why my feet were blue.

Now, I maintain that it was merely the light combined with the fair skin that my body is so delightfully wrapped in - but I will admit the old phalanges were feeling the nippy teeth of winteriness - just not to the frost-bitten extent.

Which leads me to SOCKS. For years I have attempted to keep them hidden, like embarassing school photos featuring missing teeth and fake smiles. They were to remain well inside the mouth-of-shoe perimeter or under lengthy pant hems - with no peeking allowed! It's not that I didn't like wearing them - but, sigh, I was ashamed of them.

I fear I owe socks worldwide an apology and wish to make a reconciliation from this day forth.

I pledge to wear socks without shame. They can and will poke atop sneaker, bootie or shoesies, and even to be worn with sandals when it is appropriate.
(And yes, there will always be instances when it is not appropriate for socks to be worn with sandals.)

In keeping with the atmosphere of this momentous day here is my 'Sock Honour Roll for 2011'

one: urban outfitters [here]
two: free people [here]
three: OKOK [here]
(OKOK is a brand by a Melbourne Designer -
I bought a pair of her cotton tights last year in pink - comfy and wonderful!)

four: happy socks [here]
five: country road [here]

In my sock-scouting I came across this website that made me giggle because lets face it - it's oh so very true.

May your socks be as splendid as your feet are warm and cosy.

give a little 'something'

Look at us go! Typing away, sharing our thoughts on facebook profiles, twittering like a pet shop, singing songs about all sorts of stuff, wearing text-ridden t-shirts and stomp around the house yelling out frustrations (or maybe that one is just me).
Amidst all of this, it's not often you tell a stranger something deep - the kind of something that hides just behind your ribs, protected and shy of the world.

When someone else takes a leap and actually bares a bit of their most vulnerable 'somethings', the secret hopes and untouched dreams, it makes me feel stronger. Like my 'something' that stays scared and locked away might just be safe enough to come out.
Just maybe.

A project by public installation artist, designer and urban planner, Candy Chang, saw the wall of a dilapidated house in New Orleans transformed into a literal sounding-board for members of the public to complete a simple sentence: Before I die I want to...

own a monkey! now that is a good goal! click [here] for more

Don't you just love this project? The way it encourages us to give a little 'something' of ourselves.

Who needs a the internet? All you need is a wall and my house has four of them (well actually its an apartment and the landlord might get annoyed if we started writing all over it...but you know what I mean.)

How would you finish that sentence?

giving the gift of mo

'Share the hair' I said to myself. So I did.
Below is another 'satche creation lovingly crafted for a buddy's b'day.
This one titled: Spotlight 'Stache

I also had the very exciting pleasure of using my very own wax seal (a birthday gift I received last month). My friends know me too well! How 'ye-olde' am I!?

e.

PS They were very quick snaps before I had to give the pressie so they're not great - moral of the story - brilliance can't be rushed! :)

PPS Those of you whose brows are furrowed with confusion... my nickname starts with 'L'. Otherwise that may have been a severely embarrassing oversight.

things I don't need - but I love, ok?

Lets all sit down with a cup of tea or coffee or milo or however you're beveragily-inclined and have a bit of a self-reflection moment. How much stuff do you own that is pointless?
No judgement here for I fear the blood rushing to my cheeks as I write this. I have a lot of pretty useless stuff.
"Guilty as charged, Lieutenent Junk-Detainer. I confess it's all mine, I know it just sits there, but it looks pretty, ok!?"
Of course I'm not a hoarder and, yes, I can hear the collective scoffing coming from near and far. I don't have anywhere near as much as some people - so we'll leave that right there!
Now, self-reflection, that went well. How are you feeling?

I am feeling like I need to share with you all these things I found on this website that a friend put me on to. They are things that, of course, I really don't need (and who would?) but I love them for no other reason than that they are lovable.
FYI the website is: Third Drawer Down

bless you plate [here] (I have plates but not one that is quite so polite)
sealpelt [here] (I don't have any offspring to put in one but I could find one if they're this cute!)
open/closed sign [here] (ahh... the great confuser)

rubix cube pepper mill [here] (not quite as puzzling as the real thing - or is it?)
some very dapper deers [here] (If only I could look so regal when printed on porcelain)
moustache mug [here] (I needn't say anything here but if you are confused explanation [here])
bird call whistles, set of 6 [here] (why call one bird when you can summon a miscellaneous flock?)

I suppose you have now realised that I may have become a little carried away on the website.... ooops.
Tag team - your turn!

to those who have lost

The thing is when someone passes away there seems to be gaps and chasms that open up everywhere - and in the most unlikely of places.
For all of you who are struggling to endure through these gaping holes of loss, as I know some of you are - I'm thinking of you.

twas brillig!

Ahh, well here we are tumbling down the rabbit hole again and with just cause I might add. Melbourne jewellery makers, Leoni and Vonk, have an adorable silver locket sporting none other than our little White Rabbit friend.
So with no hands to tick-tock your time down the drain, you could wander in your own wonderland or have a little part of it hanging from your neck, at the very least.

But if you really need to know the time... clock hands are sold separately - hang them from your ears, it's what we do in Wonderland! Considerably shiny and lovely, I think.

Locket [here] More silver stunners [here]

Chesire Cat says cheese and so do I!

on the cards

Oh good grief! I forgot completely to tell you that I went to Finders Keepers Market on the day of 'Satur', past. Lots of cute little things were spied and I want to share one of them today.

I love a clever greeting card and I am very disappointed to see the amount of stupid, poorly designed thickened, folded paper cards marching around with exorbitant price tags pretending to be awesome when in my humble opinion: they -- are -- not!

The following collection, however, are beautiful, funny and worth their money (I made a rhyme!).
Able and Game are a Melbourne-based company and they were one of the stalls gaining a large mental tick as favourite for Finders Keepers.

The first bunch feature very clever pics of Melbourne's train stations (there are some Brissy ones too but they are bit lost on me). Personal Fav: Balaclava. Yes i am still laughing days after. Clever, right?

The rest of these are my 'pick of the bunch'... But feel free to make your mind up [here].

My dad actually looks a bit like that... except grey and not so reminiscent of Welcome Back, Kotter.
But yes dad I do think you're rad!

(and no, funny people, I don't mean Mr. Singlet...)

You can purchase these carded creations on Etsy.

So I suggest, get into some forward thinking and planning - order some cards from Able and Game. Save yourself the shame of giving an ugly afterthought in envelope to someone who means more than such a sentiment would imply.

Spread the card-love.
